Role Overview:
The Seasonal Lifeguard / Duty Manager plays a key role in ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant operation of the St Edmund Campion summer site. As the site includes a swimming pool alongside a wider programme of activities, the postholder will be responsible for supervising all pool activities, maintaining lifeguard cover, and responding appropriately to incidents and emergencies. A valid NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) is required for the role; however, funding for NPLQ training may be available through Leisure Focus for suitable candidates who do not already hold the qualification.

In their capacity as Duty Manager, the postholder will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the site, including opening and closing procedures, operational oversight, safeguarding compliance, and the supervision of staff. The role provides clear on-site leadership and accountability, ensuring activities are delivered safely, policies and procedures are followed, and participants receive a positive, high-quality experience throughout the summer programme.

This position is critical to maintaining health and safety standards, meeting compliance requirements, and supporting the successful delivery of the summer provision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor swimming areas closely to ensure the safety of all guests by promptly responding to emergencies and enforcing safety rules.
  • Manage daily operational activities, including coordinating staff schedules, delegating tasks, and maintaining effective communication within the team.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities and equipment to uphold health and safety standards.
  • Deliver clear briefings and debriefings for staff to maintain high standards of service and safety.
  • Assist in training and supporting team members to develop their skills and promote a collaborative work environment.
  • Maintain accurate records related to incidents, attendance, and operations.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to inquiries and resolving any issues professionally and efficiently.

Required Qualifications:
Must-Haves:
  • Valid lifeguard NPLQ certification or equivalent qualification in water safety and rescue.
  • Proven ability to manage responsibilities calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Strong communication skills to interact positively with team members and visitors.
  • Organisational ability to manage daily schedules, tasks, and operational procedures efficiently.
  • Awareness of health and safety protocols applicable to aquatic environments.

Nice-to-Haves:
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a customer-facing environment.
  • First aid qualification to provide immediate care when necessary.
  • Familiarity with facility management or operational procedures in recreational or leisure settings.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and work collaboratively within a team.
